Captions – the literacy tool that is making a difference in our schools!
I’m encouraging all teachers to turn on captions whenever they use video technology in the classroom, because it is a simple, effective way of helping children learn, and the benefits are not confined to those with hearing difficulties. They help children focus, help them retain what’s being taught, improve their language and literacy development and, like all the best teaching strategies, they work without causing the students any stress or anxiety. So parents, talk about this with your friends and with your children’s teachers, and let’s try together to get captions turned on as a matter of course whenever a video is shown. Continue reading

Modern Slavery and our Australian Freedom fighters!
It’s hard to imagine that in the modern world, and in Australia we are having to recognise that slavery exists in our communities. Modern slavery encompasses sex trafficking, people trafficking and forced labour.This week, Minister for Home Affairs and Justice Brendan O’Connor paid tribute to Australian individuals and organisations who are leading the fight against thes insidious practices and awarded the inaugural Anti-Slavery Australia Freedom Awards
Fairer go for local producers
The Prime Minister has announced a Prime Ministerial Taskforce, to ensure local suppliers are able to bid for government funded projects, and stronger measures will be required in Local Procurement Plans for companies wanting to access Australian tax concessions.
